‘nhf Youth for Healthy Bangladesh’ forum formed to prevent NCD

Press release:  Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are being epidemic in developed and developing countries around the world. In Bangladesh, 67 percent of all deaths are attributed to NCDs. Therefore, the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh (NHFB) has formed a Youth Forum to engage young people in the prevention and control of these diseases.

Inaugural of ‘nhf Youth for Healthy Bangladesh’ held on Saturday at the auditorium of the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute. The forum will serve as an advocacy and supportive organization of the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh in the control and prevention of NCDs.

Founder and president of NHFB National Professor Brigadier (rtd) Abdul Malik presided over the the inaugural program. Mr. Md. Mokammel Hossain, Additional Secretary (SDG Affairs), Prime Minister’s Office graced the program as the Chief guest. In his speech, Mr. Mokammel Hossain told, ‘Todays youth will lead the country in the future. So, they have to be responsible from now on. Anything you say, ‘we will do’ does not work; rather, young people have to take responsibility for saying ‘I will.”

Mr. Rina Parveen, Additional Secretary (Public Health and World Health), Health Service Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was present as the guest of honor. She advised young people to look after their own health as well as their careers. She said that, today’s young people will be successful in their career, but if they suffer from NCDs including heart disease, diabetes at the age of 35-40, then they might not be able to enjoy their success. So, the young people need to abstain from processed foods and fast foods, need to maintain a balanced diet, to abstain from all forms of tobacco and drugs, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

Dr. Raihan-e-Jannat, Program Manager, Non-Communicable Disease Control Program of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) was present as the special guest on the occasion. Among others were Prof. Shafiqul Islam, Head of Programs, Vital Strategies Bangladesh, Mr. Abdus Salam, Grant Manager of Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids Bangladesh.

Professor Khondker  Abdul Awal (Rizvi), Secretary General of the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh gave the welcome address at the commencement of the program. Then Professor Sohel Reza Chowdhury, head of the Department of Epidemiology and Research at the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute presented the keynote paper. After him, Professor Golam Mohiuddin Faruque, Project Director of Bangladesh Cancer Society gave an initial idea about the cause, control and prevention of non-communicable diseases.

About 100 youth from different schools, colleges and universities participated in the opening ceremony of the ‘nhf Youth for Healthy Bangladesh’ forum, including members of Bangladesh Scouts, Bangladesh Girls Guide Association, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense Urban Community Volunteer.
