PRESS RELEASE: It is very important to ensure safe roads to prevent road crashes to reduce the burden on the health sector. Ensuring a safe road system will reduce the burden on the health budget and improve the quality of hospital services.
Speakers made the remark at the seminar titled ‘Impact of Road Crashes in Health Sector and What We Can Do’ held at National Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute (NITOR) today Thursday (3 November 2022). Bangladesh Orthopedic Society and National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh organized the seminar.
Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Howlader, Secretary of Health Services Department of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was present as the chief guest in the seminar. He said that treating the victims of road crashes is not the solution. Rather we should emphasize on crash prevention. We can claim us successful only if we can reduce the number of patients in the hospital.
Bangladesh Orthopedic Society President Professor Dr. Monayem Hossain presided over the seminar. Ilias Kanchan, chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai, was present as a special guest in the seminar.
Ilias Kanchan said that in many countries, ministry of health is responsible for road safety. But in Bangladesh, Ministry of Road Transport is liable for it. But there are roads under the LGED and various city corporations. So, if we want to ensure safe road, we need to work together with a same target.
In the seminar, Professor Khondker Abdul Awal (Rizvi), Secretary General of National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh and former director of NITOR, shed light on the impact of road crashes on the health sector. He said that our hospitals are overburdened with patients. In order to reduce the pressure on the health sector, safe roads must be ensured. For this reason, it is important to follow the road safety guidelines declared by the United Nations. On the other hand, he urged the Ministry of Health to formulate and implement post-crash management policies to reduce deaths due to road crash.
Discussants in the seminar said that road crashes or road accidents have come to the fore as a worrying public health problem in Bangladesh. Road crashes are the leading cause of death among 5 to 29-year-olds in the country. A large part of the number of people who die every year in Bangladesh due to road crashes were not being taken to the hospital in time. Post-crash management or providing immediate post-accident care must be worked on to prevent these deaths.
Members of Bangladesh Orthopedic Society, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Road Safety Coalition were present in the seminar.
