25 years to Ganguly’s historic ton in Lord’s

North 24 Parganas (Kolkata) correspondent: A young Indian chap came out to bat on No. 3 on 22nd June 1996. He was making his Test Debut for his country. Little did the spectators and the team know he would create history. He scored a magnificent debut ton. This young chap was non other than former Indian Captain also known as Prince of Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly. He achieved the feat against England on the third day of the second test being played at Lord’s Cricket Ground in England.
England were bundled out for 344. Venkatesh Prasad took a offer and Ganguly got the big wickets of Nasser Hussain and Graeme Hick. In India’s first innings, they were struggling at 98 for 3. Then, Ganguly came out and smashed his debut ton by scoring 131 of 301 balls with the help of 20 boundaries.
The left-handed batsman was involved in a 94 run stand with another test debutant Rahul Dravid for the sixth wicket. Unfortunately, Dravid missed out his century by 5 runs and scored 95. Ganguly is the only Indian batsman to score a debut test ton at Lord’s. He was finally sent back to pavilion by Alan Mullah.
Over the years, Ganguly went on to become one of the most successful Indian captains. Currently, he is the President of BCCI. India will always be grateful to Sourav Ganguly for his achievements that made Indian team to reach it’s height.
