Latham And Somerville Take New Zealand to 79/1 at Lunch

North 24 Parganas (India) correspondent: Will Somerville and Tom Latham have been solid in the first session of the day having taken the total to 79/1 in chase of 284. The two overnight batters have now added 76 runs for the second wicket and frustrated India bowlers who ended the morning session disappointed failing to find a breakthrough.
India needed wickets. New Zealand needed to deny them that and that’s exactly what happened. Will Somerville, the nightwatchman, joined forces with opener Tom Latham to frustrate India bowlers who hunted unsuccessfully through the session for a breakthrough. Ajinkya Rahane used all his five specialist bowlers but none troubled the NZ batters who were patient, solid and showed intent in rotating the strike regularly to stave off any pressure that India would have wanted to pile up and induce a mistake as a result. The tourists now need 205 runs to win in two sessions with nine wickets remaining.
That will be lunch on day five. New Zealand have gone through the morning session safely. They have made 79/1 in 35 overs in chase of 284. Will Somerville has made 36 off 109 while Tom Latham is batting on 35 off 96.
Will Somerville walked in as the nightwatchman yesterday and he has done the job quite well. In fact, he’s batting like a specialist batter and has done enough to frustrate the India bowlers. He has consumed 94 deliveries and scored 28 runs with four fours so far. And then there’s opener Tom Latham batting on 29 with two fours to his name. A lot of batting still to come for New Zealand. The first session seems to be going their way unless India strike with a couple of wickets late. Score 63/1, chasing 284.
